Single Strand Ringbolt Hitching - Single Strand Cockscombing - How to Tie.
In this short video, I will show you how to tie ringbolt hitching. I believe that at a later date it also became known as Cockscombing. In Ashley's Book of Knots it says, "Another old name for it was “platted rings.” Nowadays it is sometimes called “hog backing,” which is, I believe, a literal translation of the Swedish name. A picturesque needlework term, “cockscombing,” has recently been applied."
My understanding is that Ringbolt Hitching or Cockscombing was a way of protecting cordage from chaffing against a hard steel surface.
Ringbolt Hitching or Cockscombing is often used in the eyes of chest beckets, hammock clews, ditty bag handles and other decorative application.
My personal preference is to do Cockscombing using the 3 stranded method, as the loops on the back of the work is more closely spaced.
